Critical acclaim James McPherson, Pulitzer Prize winner, Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era: “I read through [Private Hell's poems] with admiration for your muse and your insight into the life of a private soldier. I will keep them on my bookshelf and consult them from time to time when I wish to commune with the past.” Steve Allen, Author, composer, playwright, TV icon: “Fascinating . . . each of the poems is powerful and makes an important philosophical point. The book deserves wide attention.” Charles Champlin, Arts Critic Emeritus, Los Angeles Times: “[A] remarkable sheaf of poems . . . an original concept brought off most excellently well . . . so many are sardonically funny, and the more touching for their note of hard irony.” Bertram Barnett, Interpretive Ranger, Gettysburg National Military Park, and expert on poetry in Civil War America: “This collection of soldier-poems, narrated by the singular Pvt., a ubiquitous Everyman, is a marvelous creation. In the modern era, where the power of poetry as a medium and as message seemed nearly lost, Pvt. Hell's commonly uncommon reflections regarding the wanton destruction around him are powerful stuff, delivered in a period package. Placed in the unenviable ranks of some Civil War army, living and dying, dying or dead, his devilishly sarcastic wit shines through clearly, but never at the expense of the truth. Where feeling and understanding are called for, they appear with an artist's touch. As author (and the Private’s occasional foil), Steven B. Bartel retains command of Victorian sensibilities, and transmits them authentically. Using meter to deliver its messages, Pray Tell, Private Hell is a unique and worthwhile addition to the modern literature of the Civil War.” About the author Steven Bartel’s keen interest in the American Civil War began when he was nine, at th

FEATURES

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0581/9701/6765/files/pray-tell-private-hell-bartel-steven-history-932.jpg?v=1699315989
glenn-becks-common-sense-the-case-against-an-out-of-control-government-inspired-by-thomas-paine
Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine
Product description #1 New York Times bestselling author and popular radio and television host Glenn Beck revisits Thomas Paine's Common Sense. In any era, great Americans inspire us to reach our full potential. They know with conviction what they believe within themselves. They understand that all actions have consequences. And they find commonsense solutions to the nation’s problems. One such American, Thomas Paine, was an ordinary man who changed the course of history by penning Common Sense, the concise 1776 masterpiece in which, through extraordinarily straightforward and indisputable arguments, he encouraged his fellow citizens to take control of America’s future—and, ultimately, her freedom. Nearly two and a half centuries later, those very freedoms once again hang in the balance. And now, Glenn Beck revisits Paine’s powerful treatise with one purpose: to galvanize Americans to see past government’s easy solutions, two-party monopoly, and illogical methods and take back our great country.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0581/9701/6765/files/glenn-becks-common-sense-case-against-control-government-inspired-thomas-paine-history-670.jpg?v=1699316154
mummies-temples-and-tombs-ancient-egyptians-book-4
Mummies, Temples and Tombs (Ancient Egyptians) (Book 4)
Product Description Published to accompany Wall-to-Wall’s thrilling, live-action TV series Ancient Egyptians, this entertaining book vividly brings to life the stories of five fascinating people who lived in Egypt over 2,000 years ago, as recorded on original papyrus documents or etched in stone. The individuals whose lives are so vividly recounted include the royal sculptor Thutmose, who even today is remembered as creator of one of the best known pieces of ancient Egyptian art – the plaster bust of Nefertiti, the heretic pharaoh Akhenaton’s beautiful queen. Then there is Wenamun, the priest who set out on an heroic adventure down the Nile in search of materials to build a sacred barge to the god Amun. His life is graphically described in the autobiography inscribed on his tomb which outlines his thrilling voyage and the trading links and lands through which he travelled. The tale of the young weaver Nakht tells of a short and tragic life. By the time he died aged fifteen, Nakht had suffered both hunger and hard labour. He even had traces of a red powder deep in his lungs – granite – a sure sign of a cruel punishment meted out to him for some minor misdemeanor. Yet there were those that loved him, for his remains show that he had been carefully washed, his face shaved and his nails trimmed before being placed in his final resting place, a wooden coffin that would have cost more than a month’s wages.Other tales include those of Weni the palace official, who uncovered a plot to kill the king, and Pharaoh Nectanebo II, last of the Egyptian pharaohs, who sought to protect his realm through magical ritual. About the Author Clive Dickinson has worked widely in both fiction and non-fiction children’s publishing for twenty years. It travels to the frontlines of battle and into the hearts of two men from different cultures whose intimate friendship and mutual passion for freedom can inspire us all.Ahmad's War, Ahmad's Peace is the author's tribute to Ahmad Shawkat, the Iraqi Kurd who served as Goldfarb's translator during “Major Combat Operations.” Under an oppressive regime, Ahmad worked to promote freedom of expression. Goldfarb recounts his powerful yet all-too-brief relationship with Ahmad and introduces readers to the life of a true hero.Eighteen years old when the Ba’ath Party seized control in Iraq, Ahmad intimately and poetically describes his imprisonment and torture twice by Saddam Hussein’s regime. Ahmad was banished from his hometown of Mosul for his political writings, and just as he began to taste freedom with the fall of Saddam and his large family’s return home, Ahmad was murdered for publicly decrying Islamic terror in newspaper editorials that he began to publish.Ahmad’s story of one heroic man will forever change our perception of what all Iraqis have suffered and continue to endure. About the Author For almost two decades, Michael Goldfarb has been public radio's most familiar voice from London. He is currently senior correspondent for “Inside Out,” the award-winning radio documentary unit of WBUR Boston. He has covered major conflicts from Bosnia to Iraq to Northern Ireland. In 2003, he was awarded broadcast journalism's highest honor, the DuPont-Columbia Award for his report “Surviving Torture.” In 2005 he won the Lowell Thomas award given by the Overseas Press Club for his report, “British Jihad: Inside Out.” Since September 2001, Goldfarb has reported extensively from the Middle East. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.

Praise for The Diary of a Young Girl

“A truly remarkable book.”
—The New York Times

“One of the most moving personal documents to come out of World War II.”
—The Philadelphia Inquirer

“There may be no better way to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II than to reread
The Diary of a Young Girl, a testament to an indestructible nobility of spirit in the face of pure evil.”
—Chicago Tribune“The single most compelling personal account of the Holocaust . . . remains astonishing and excruciating.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“How brilliantly Anne Frank captures the self-conscious alienation and naïve self-absorption of adolescence.”
—Newsday

Review

“A truly remarkable book.”

—The New York Times

“One of the most moving personal documents to come out of World War II.”

—The Philadelphia Inquirer

“The new edition reveals a new depth to Anne’s dreams, irritations, hardship, and passions. . . . These passages, which constitute 30 percent more material, reinforce the fact that Anne was first and foremost a teenage girl, not a remote and flawless symbol. She fretted about and tried to cope with her own sexuality. Like many young girls, she often found herself in disagreements with her mother. And like any teenager, she veered between the carefree nature of a child and the full-fledged sorrow of an adult. Audrey had set her mother’s clothes out for her the night before, the blue-gray silk suit she wore whenever she had something important to go to and felt well enough to go out. It didn’t get more important than this. Ellen’s son, Audrey’s brother, William Edward Parker, was graduating from Annapolis Naval Academy, as an ensign, like his father and grandfather before him. Ellen was only sorry that her late husband and father-in-law wouldn’t be there to see it. She and Audrey were the only family Will had now. Unlike his father and grandfather, Will was more interested in planes than ships. His next stop was basic flight training at the Naval Air Station at Pensacola in Florida He was going to be a navy pilot. He would receive more advanced flight training after that, and eventually would become an expert at taking off and landing on an aircraft carrier. He had earned a Bachelor of Science degree. His father, Captain Francis Parker, had died three years before of a brain tumor. His grandfather, who had died when Will and Audrey were very young, was only a dim memory now, a tall man in a uniform with a lot of braid on it: three-star Vice Admiral Jeremiah Parker. They were a distinguished naval family, and there had never been any question about Will following in their footsteps. It was an unspoken law in their household, Parker men went to Annapolis, and Will wouldn’t have da

FEATURES

FEATURES

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0581/9701/6765/files/flying-angels-novel-media-books-914.jpg?v=1699329438
notice-true-story-high-finance-murder-mans-fight-justice
Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man's Fight for Justice

Product Description Freezing Order, the follow-up to Red Notice, is available now! “[Red Notice] does for investing in Russia and the former Soviet Union what Liar’s Poker did for our understanding of Salomon Brothers, Wall Street, and the mortgage-backed securities business in the 1980s. Bill Browder started out his adult life as the Wall Street maverick whose instincts led him to Russia just after the breakup of the Soviet Union, where he made his fortune. Along the way he exposed corruption, and when he did, he barely escaped with his life. His Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky wasn’t so lucky: he ended up in jail, where he was tortured to death. That changed Browder forever. He saw the murderous heart of the Putin regime and has spent the last half decade on a campaign to expose it. Because of that, he became Putin’s number one enemy, especially after Browder succeeded in having a law passed in the United States—The Magnitsky Act—that punishes a list of Russians implicated in the lawyer’s murder. Putin famously retaliated with a law that bans Americans from adopting Russian orphans. A financial caper, a crime thriller, and a political crusade, Red Notice is the story of one man taking on overpowering odds to change the world, and also the story of how, without intending to, he found meaning in his life. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next twelve months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally—and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows, in cinematic detail, how Churchill taught the British people “the art of being fearless.” It is a story of political brinkmanship, but it’s also an intimate domestic drama, set against the backdrop of Churchill’s prime-ministerial country home, Chequers; his wartime retreat, Ditchley, where he and his entourage go when the moon is brightest and the bombing threat is highest; and of course 10 Downing Street in London. Drawing on diaries, original archival documents, and once-secret intelligence reports—some released only recently—Larson provides a new lens on London’s darkest year through the day-to-day experience of Churchill and his family: his wife, Clementine; their youngest daughter, Mary, who chafes against her parents’ wartime protectiveness; their son, Randolph, and his beautiful, unhappy wife, Pamela; Pamela’s illicit lover, a dashing American emissary; and the advisers in Churchill’s “Secret Circle,” to whom he turns in the hardest moments. The Splendid and the Vile takes readers out of today’s political dysfunction and back to a time of true leadership, when, in the face of unrelenting horror, Churchill’s eloquence, courage, and perseverance bound a country, and a family, together. Review “The kind of page-turner you always want in a history book but rarely get . . . Larson gives the reader a ‘you are there’ sense of the intensity of Churchill’s work with his team on life-and-death challenges—and solving them at a pace I found to be mind-blowing.”—Bill Gates, GatesNotes“Published in the midst of one of the greatest international crises since World War II, Larson’s new book tells the story of London facing the Blitz during that war through the characters of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, members of his family and his various advisers. Readers are left with an indelible portrait of a nation coming together to face a brutal assault from German bombs under leadership that is wise, empathetic and strategic—not to mention highly witty and charming.”—Time“Erik Larson, in his suspenseful new book, The Splendid and the Vile, captures the foreboding that settled on London leading up to the bombardment, as well as Churchill’s determination not to give in. . . . Plus, there is Larson’s reliable, cinematic writing and his intimate portrayal of Churchill.”—The New Yorker“An enthralling page-turner.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “A damn good story. There are narrative arcs, heroes, villains, and suspense aplenty to craft the kind of rich, immersive histories that have become Larson’s trademark.”—Rolling Stone “This is Erik Larson’s moment. His affecting and affectionate chronicle of the Churchill family during the Blitz, the Nazi World War II bombing campaign against Great Britain, has found a hungry audience in the United States.”—The Bos

FEATURES

#1NEW YORK TIMESBESTSELLER The author ofThe Devil in the White CityandDead Wakedelivers anintimate chronicleof Winston Churchill and London during the Blitzan inspiring portrait of courage and leadership in a time of unprecedented crisis

One of [Erik Larsons] best books yet . . . perfectly timed for the moment.TimeA bravura performance by one of Americas greatest storytellers.NPR

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review Time Vogue NPR The Washington Post Chicago Tribune The Globe & Mail Fortune Bloomberg New York PostThe New York Public Library Kirkus Reviews LibraryReads PopMatters

On Winston Churchills first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. But James Oakes’s brilliant history of Lincoln’s antislavery strategies reveals a striking consistency and commitment extending over many years. The linchpin of antislavery for Lincoln was the Constitution of the United States.
Lincoln adopted the antislavery view that the Constitution made freedom the rule in the United States, slavery the exception. Where federal power prevailed, so did freedom. Where state power prevailed, that state determined the status of slavery, and the federal government could not interfere. It would take state action to achieve the final abolition of American slavery. With this understanding, Lincoln and his antislavery allies used every tool available to undermine the institution. Wherever the Constitution empowered direct federal action―in the western territories, in the District of Columbia, over the slave trade―they intervened. As a congressman in 1849 Lincoln sponsored a bill to abolish slavery in Washington, DC. He reentered politics in 1854 to oppose what he considered the unconstitutional opening of the territories to slavery by the Kansas–Nebraska Act. He attempted to persuade states to abolish slavery by supporting gradual abolition with compensation for slaveholders and the colonization of free Blacks abroad.
President Lincoln took full advantage of the antislavery options opened by the Civil War. Enslaved people who escaped to Union lines were declared free. The Emancipation Proclamation, a military order of the president, undermined slavery across the South. It led to abolition by six slave states, which then joined the coalition to affect what Lincoln called the "King’s cure": state ratification of the constitutional amendment that in 1865 finally abolished slavery.

Review

"With this superb book, Oakes opens the way for a thorough retelling of the nation’s history from the American Revolution to the Civil War."
―
Sean Wilentz, author of No Property in Man

"Eleanor Roosevelt used to say, ‘If you must compromise, compromise up.’ The champion compromiser up was Lincoln, as Oakes proves, avoiding the simple views of him as just opportunist or just emancipator. He knew where he was going, even when he had to obscure the goal."
―
Garry Wills, author of Lincoln at Gettysburg

"A diamond of historical scholarship, with deep research and understanding shining brilliantly in every facet."
―
Sidney Blumenthal, author of The Political Life of Abraham Lincoln

"With crisp and lucid prose, Oakes provides a map that guides the reader through the zigs and zags of the path to freedom."
―
James M. McPherson, author of Battle Cry of Freedom

"Brilliant…A landmark contribution."
―
David S. Reynolds, author of Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Times

"On Lincoln, on the Civil War, on slavery’s downfall, on constitutional change―this is an indispensable book."
―
Amy Dru Stanley, author of From Bondage to Contract

"No other scholar has shed more light on Lincoln’s way of dealing with slavery."
―
Michael Burlingame, author of Abraham Lincoln: A Life

"Cogently argued, by one of our foremost historians of emancipation."
―
Manisha Sinha, author of The Slave’s Cause

"I read this remarkable book with pleasure and admiration.
